archival print. 17’’ x 11’’
Botanically speaking, for a plant that is capable of flowering, when in bloom, it will produce a flower. However, there is flora that does not produce petal or piston or stamen and still experiences a bloom. A fern, moss, conifers. A pinecone is a bloom of its mother, the pine tree.
This question came to me in the weeks leading up to the 2026 Juneteenth Joyfest performance. Do I have to flower to bloom? Do I need to be beautiful in my spectacle to be worthy of claiming my growth, my maturation? Do I want to be a petalled, pollinating thing, or can I be okay with the idea of being a thing that releases spores or seeds without all the fanfare of a bouquet? Do I get to choose? Does it matter?
